Advanced Life Support (ALS) defibrillators are the second step in treating a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victim who has been treated with an automated external defibrillator (AED). When an AED response program works, the job is not over. Once ALS personnel show up, the patient will be treated with an ALS monitor/defibrillator. Professional responders will use the advanced machines to monitor the patient’s status and report information to the hospital. ALS treatment is the fourth link in the Chain of Survival.
The Chain of Survival was developed by members of the medical community to help first responders treat victims of cardiac emergencies. The Chain of Survival is:
- Call 911 Immediately
- Begin Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Attach an Automated External Defibrillator, and use if the unit recommends it
- Advanced Life Support
Every year, approximately 250,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest. Learning and using the Chain of Survival, and following the use of an AED with advanced life support services, can help insure that more people will defy these statistics and live to tell their story.
