Can You Buy the Philips HeartStart Home Without a Prescription?

Yes. The HeartStart Home was the first defibrillator the FDA cleared for over-the-counter sale, so no prescription is required to buy the unit itself. One exception matters: the optional Infant/Child SMART Pads Cartridge is sold separately and is prescription-only. The device is cleared for adults and, with that cartridge fitted, for children under 25 kg (55 lbs) or aged 0 to 8, where it delivers 19 A / 50 J in place of the adult 32 A / 150 J. It is a semi-automatic AED, meaning the responder presses the orange Shock button when prompted, and it walks through the rescue with voice prompts and automatic CPR guidance. It weighs 3.3 lbs, measures 2.8 x 7.4 x 8.3 in, and is rated IP21, which is drip-proof and intended for indoor use. It runs on the M5070A long-life lithium battery with the M5071A adult SMART Pads Cartridge. Warranty is 8 years, with 4 years on the battery.

Ordering was easy. Shipped quickly. Got what I ordered. The reason for the loss of two stars: These things have a useful life of two years, which is understandable, given the nature of the product, and the necessity of adhesives (for the skin) to not be dried out. I'm OK with that. The problem is that the two adult pad replacements I ordered on 6/20/24 have an expiration date of 12/19/25. I lost 25% of the useful life of the product...before I even received it.
