We want your AED program to be ready in case a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) emergency happens in your place of business, exercise, worship or other public gathering place.
Importance Of Having An AED Program
Sudden cardiac arrest happens to over 1,000 people every day in the United States. Many of these victims die because help does not arrive soon enough. SCA often happens without warning and sudden cardiac death can occur in as little as ten minutes. For every minute that passes without proper SCA treatment, the chances of the victim surviving go down by ten percent. Early treatment is the key to survival.
Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. Heart attacks generally are preceded by warning signs such as shortness of breath, pain in the neck or arms, chest discomfort and nausea or lightheadedness. Sudden cardiac arrest on the other hand, generally happens without warning and without regard to age, sex, social or economic status. Children, teenagers, adults and the elderly can all be stricken by SCA.
Sudden cardiac arrest is an interruption of the heart’s electrical activity, otherwise known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). VF can be caused by defects in the heart known as Long QT Syndrome or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, or it can be caused by being hit in the chest by a punch or a ball during a sporting activity. Sometimes SCA happens for unknown reasons. But no matter what, treatment with an AED must arrive within 3 – 5 minutes to avoid brain damage or death. A shock from an automated external defibrillator is the only way to stop VF and restore normal rhythm to the heart. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help a victim’s chances of survival by keeping oxygen flowing to the brain, lungs and heart, but it cannot restart a heart. Only an AED can do that.
Thomas Galvin knows this all too well. The 49 year old firefighter and three other firefighters had just returned from an emergency call on January 18, 2010. Mr. Galvin wasn’t feeling well when they arrived back at the station; he took two aspirin and told his Captain how he was feeling. Captain Arthur Zielinksi said that Mr. Galvin started walking away and then suddenly collapsed. When Captain Zielinski got to his side, Mr. Galvin was turning blue; he wasn’t breathing, was unresponsive and had no pulse. The Captain called for the AED and began performing CPR. Captain Zielinski had to administer four shocks from the defibrillator before Mr. Galvin’s heart began beating again and before a pulse could be detected. Seven minutes later, paramedics arrived and loaded him into the ambulance. During the drive to the hospital, Mr. Galvin had to be shocked three more times. His rehabilitation is expected to be long, but his prognosis is good.
Available HeartStart FRx AED Accessories
It’s obvious that having an AED on hand and ready for an SCA emergency is necessary for saving lives. But having AED accessories will make your AED program easier to implement and SCA emergencies easier to handle. AED brands carries all the HeartStart FRx accessories you need.
For example, with the FRx Infant/Child Key you won’t need to have separate pediatric AED pads. When the key is inserted into the FRx, the AED unit automatically switches to pediatric mode. This will reduce the amount of energy in the shocks and the voice instructions will automatically change to instructions specifically made for a child in cardiac arrest.
Make sure you always have power available for your FRx and have an extra battery on-hand. AED brands also carries FRx Aviation Batteries for airline use. Make sure your AED is stored in a safe and secure way by using a Compact AED Wall Cabinet. These cabinets are American made and can be surface mounted, semi-recessed or fully recessed. Be sure that your automated external defibrillator location is clearly marked with AED wall signs. AED brands offers flanged wall signs, flat wall signs, v-shape wall signs, as well as static AED window decals.
Protect Your FRx AED With Protective Cases
Other important FRx AED accessories include the Philips HeartStart FRx Carry Case and the Quicklook AED Portable Backpack. Both are sturdy and designed to get you quickly and easily to the SCA emergency. Make sure that your staff is fully trained and ready to handle an SCA emergency by using the Philips HeartStart FRx AED Trainer and the FRx Instructor’s Training kit.
Partnering with AED brands and Philips will help make your AED program successful and help ensure the safety of the public you serve and the staff you employ. Don’t be caught without an automated external defibrillator. Too many people die from sudden cardiac arrest every year in the United States.
