A small medical equipment repair shop, now known as Medtronic, Inc., was founded more than fifty years ago by Earl Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie. In 1998, Medtronic combined its services with a company known as Physio-Control which was founded in 1955 by Dr. K. William Edmark. Dr. Edmark developed the first commercial defibrillator. Now known as automated external defibrillators or AEDs, the LIFEPAK lines of AEDs developed by Medtronic/Physio-Control are manufactured for use by emergency medical services, the military, hospitals and the general public. AED brands is proud to offer both the CR Plus and LIFEPAK 500, 1000, 12, 15 and 20 AED models and their accessories.

Automated external defibrillators are used in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) emergencies. SCA strikes over 400,000 people every year in the United States. Many of these SCA victims die before help arrives. This happens because sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical disruption of the heart’s rhythm called ventricular fibrillation or VF. When VF occurs, the victim’s heart eventually stops beating and the victim stops breathing. If the heart is not re-started in 10 minutes or less, the chances of the victim surviving are virtually zero. For each minute that passes during sudden cardiac arrest, the victim’s chances of surviving lessen by 10 percent. The only way to get an SCA victim’s heart beating normally again is to shock it with an automated external defibrillator.

Sudden cardiac arrest can strike at any time, any where and to anyone, young and old alike. It has no regard for social or economic status nor does it matter if the victim is in excellent, good or bad health. SCA does not discriminate. Some potential victims may be identified if it is found that they suffer from a genetic defect called Long QT Syndrome or if they have Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and others may go into cardiac arrest while playing sports and by accidentally being hit in the chest by a ball or by running into another player. However, many others just collapse and no cause is ever found. The only way to treat a sudden cardiac arrest victim is to make sure that an AED is near and is used within a very small window of time, usually before emergency medical services personnel arrive.

In June, 2010 at Maple Meadows Golf Course in Wood Dale, Illinois, Bryan Lindstrom was working in the pro shop when someone ran in yelling that someone had collapsed at the 4th hole of the course. Mr. Lindstrom grabbed the automated external defibrillator from the bar area and ran out to the golfer while another golf course employee called 911. When Mr. Lindstrom arrived at the hole he found that the victim was barely breathing and that the victim’s brother was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Mr. Lindstrom opened the defibrillator case, turned the unit on, and followed the directions. He was directed where to attach the pads and then instructed to push the button to apply a shock. After the one shock, the victim’s heart restarted and he appeared to stabilize. Soon after, the Wood Dale Fire Protection District paramedics arrived and transported the victim to the Alexian Brothers Hospital in Elk Grove Village, where he was expected to recover.

Golf courses can be deadly places for sudden cardiac arrest victims. Getting emergency crews to a victim can take more time because of the layout and size of the greens, and it’s sometimes difficult to get emergency medical equipment across the grass. Having Medtronic/Physio-Control AEDs and AED accessories available throughout the course and in the clubhouse can make the difference between life and death. Making sure your AED is protected with a small AED Protective Carry Case, a Medtronic Hard Shell Carry Case, or a Quicklook AED Portable Backpack is an excellent way to shield your equipment from damage and make it easy to carry to the scene of the SCA emergency.

Displaying the location of your AED is simple by using AED Window Static Cling Decals, and V-Shaped Wall Displays, and mounting your LIFEPAK CR Plus is made easy by using a wall bracket or compact AED Wall Cabinet. Training your staff to respond to SCA emergencies can be done by ordering the Medtronic LIFEPAK CR Plus Training System or the QUIK-COMBO 3-Lead Patient Simulator.

AED brands is proud to be working with Medtronic to bring you a variety of automated external defibrillator units and AED accessories to fit all your needs. It doesn’t matter if you are setting up an AED program for a large corporation, a small health club or fitness center, an elementary school or an airport, Medtronic and AED brands have the AED supplies you need. Make sure that you and your staff are ready to serve the needs of the people who use your facility by being prepared for a sudden cardiac arrest by having an AED unit and AED accessories on site.
